The Marshall M. Parks Medal

1981-1982 AAPOS President, Bronze Medalist

Alfred G. Smith, MD

Dr. Alfred Smith was a charter member of AAPOS, serving as president in 1982-1983. Following a fellowship with Drs. Albert, Costenbader and Parks, he established his practice in Coral Gables as the first pediatric ophthalmologist in the state of Florida. He founded the pediatric ophthalmology clinic at the Variety Children’s Hospital in Miami, now Miami Children’s Hospital. He was on the volunteer faculty of the University of Miami Medical School Ophthalmology Department and arranged for residents from the newly organized University of Miami ophthalmology residency, now Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, to rotate at Children’s Hospital for their pediatric training. Dr. Smith’s interest in better vision screening for children resulted in developing a poster, “See Red”, to educate pediatricians and family practitioners. He served with the Society for the Prevention of Blindness, Dade County School Health Advisory Committee (vision screening) and the Florida Ophthalmology Society including as president.
