Monte A. Del Monte, MD
Dr. Monte A. Del Monte, MD, Skillman Professor of Pediatric Ophthalmology at the University of Michigan/ Kellogg Eye Center, has served as chair of several committees on the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, including the International Affairs Committee, the Membership committee, the nominating committee, the National Children’s Eye Care Foundation Advisory Board, and as a member-at-large of the Board of Directors. His service to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) included chairing the Section 6 BCSC committee, the Provision Self-Assessment Committee, and the Pediatric Ophthalmology section of the Eye Wiki Editorial Board. He has also served as president of the American Orthoptic Council and the Costenbader Pediatric Ophthalmology Society, Chair of the Certification Committee of the Joint Commission for Allied Health Professionals in Ophthalmology, and has been a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Knights Templar Eye Research Foundation. He is the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement award from AAPOS and AAO, the Secretariat award from the AAO, and was selected as an Honorary member of the American Association of Certified Orthoptists for his service to Orthoptists. He has lectured and performed Medical Mission teaching and clinical care widely throughout the world with ORBIS and other organizations and has presented 47 invited, guest, keynote as well as 13 named lectures. Dr. Del Monte has authored or co-authored over 130 publications, 4 books, and 18 book chapters. He was the founding Director of Pediatric Ophthalmology and the University of Michigan for 37 years. He also served as director or co-director of Pediatric Ophthalmology Fellowship training at the University of Michigan for the past 34 years and considers the training 72 AUPO/ FCC approved clinical and research fellows from the United States and 43 observer and research fellows from countries throughout the world his most significant and rewarding accomplishment.
