2025 Socioeconomic Pre-Day

Socioeconomic Committee
Pre-AAPOS Meeting

Date:  Wednesday, March 5, 2025
Time:  8:00am-4:00pm
Fee:  $260 (includes continental breakfast and boxed lunch)

We all know how much fun it can be to be a pediatric ophthalmologist!  And we all know that the revenue collection side is rarely part of that fun.  Join us for the pre-AAPOS socioeconomic meeting where we find ways to make the unfun aspects of practice management easier so our patients can take center stage.  Our different topics will approach practical and generally easy solutions to keep the fun in your day, your week, your month and your year.

The Socioeconomic Committee has members from academic medicine, multispecialty practices, pediatric ophthalmology practices and solo practices.  Our goal is to present material from the perspectives of the different practice models, so everyone walks away with new and pertinent information.  And we’ll end with a social hour!

Specific topics:

  1. Cybersecurity: why is medicine part of our country’s critical infrastructure?  Hear from a cybersecurity expert on the current landscape as it applies to medicine, and straightforward mitigation strategies for cybersecurity incidents that have occurred within ophthalmology.
  2. Contract Negotiations: hear from pediatric ophthalmologists in different practice settings (academics, specialty pediatrics, multispecialty practices) on how to successfully negotiate contracts for your socioeconomic health.
  3. Improve revenues not just by seeing more patients and having less time!:  Hear from practicing pediatric ophthalmologists that utilize virtual assistants, cash payments, and physician extenders to provide excellent care.
  4. Taking hospital calls: What are our obligations to take hospital call?  How and why are some ophthalmologists being paid for taking call?  This will be a debate/discussion on the pros and cons of these issues.
  5. How Advocacy works towards better socioeconomic health! Hear from Polsinelli, the lobbying firm working for AAPOS, about the work they are doing on Capitol Hill and in supporting our individual states.
  6. Pediatric Coding Updates: consider specific elements of our pediatric ophthalmology practices (with examples) and how those fit into the medical decision-making model so that you are appropriately compensated for the work you do.
  7. AAPOS Policy Statements: Do you know we have 2-3 dozen AAPOS Board of Director approved policy statements that are on the AAPOS website?  We will walk through the existing policy statements and how they will benefit your practice currently and in the future.
  8. What we wish our Administrators knew?  And what our Administrators wished their doctors understood…  A fun session designed to bridge the gap between the clinical care and the business side of what we do.
  9. Social hour: time to catch up with each other as we embark on the start of AAPOS’ 50th annual meeting.

*This event is included in the Administrator's Program.  Registered Administrators do not need to register for this workshop separately.
